A full revision of this standard work of
reference is being undertaken with the aid of grants from the Henry Moore
Foundation and the Paul Mellor Centre for Studies in British Art. The work is
estimated to take five years and will involve a complete reassessment of
Gunnis's work and the incorporation of all relevenat research since his book was
first published. The aim is to produce a dictionary which meets the highest
modern academic standards, comparable in depth and quality to Howard Colvin's
Biographical Dictionary of
British Architects. Since the
work will be prepared with the aid of a database, it will be capable of
migrating into future systems. The small editorial team will be working to a
strict timetable and so will not attempt to undertake new
research. The success of the project will therefore depend to a considerable
extent on the good will of scholars and others interested in British Sculpture
of the period. It will be necessary to discover what relevant work is in
progress and intended for publication within the lifetime of the project, so
that new findings have their proper place in the dictionary. It would be
appreciated if scholars would bear the project in mind when data surfaces that
they do not intend to use themselves. We have a sample sheet indication how
information may be logged, and would be delighted to send it on to potential
contributors.
