Late 17th Century Monuments

Autumn 2010

This will probably take place in the autumn but details have not yet been finalised. Provisionally we will start at Cambridge station and from there take a coach to Babraham, where St Peter's Church contains the enigmatic Bushnell monument to Richard (ob 1658) and Sir Thomas Bennet (ob 1667) as well as the small monument by Stanton to Judith Bennet (ob 1713) and a Gothick mural monument of 1802 by Henry Hopper to General Adene. Then to Haslingfield where All Saints Church contains a wealth of tombs and some funerary achievements to the Wendy family of Haslingfield Hall, including a fine standing figure of 1673 to Sir Thomas Wendy, probably by William Stanton. Then to Bassingbourne where SS Peter and Paul's church contains a large brass to the Turpin family (1683) and an unusual bas-relief shrouded effigy in white marble to Henry Buller (ob 1647). Finally to Longstowe where the Victorian St Mary's church - in the grounds of Longstowe Hall - contains a number of monuments to the Cage and Bovey families removed from the  former St Mary's, that of Sir Ralph Bovey (ob 1679) depicting the deceased rising up from his grave and grasping an anchor let down from the sky.
